Meet the Artist - Jen

How long have you been teaching art?

I’ve been teaching art for 17 years in total — 13 years in secondary education, followed by 4 wonderful years running Budding Artists. I began my career as a secondary school art teacher, but eventually made the big (and very exciting!) decision to step away from the classroom to create something truly special for children in the community.

When did you first realise you loved art?

From a very young age. I remember painting with colour and feeling like it was magical. I loved the process just as much as the finished piece. My dad taught me how to draw properly, which gave me confidence, and I was endlessly inspired by the beautiful illustrations in Beatrix Potter books. I was also lucky to have inspiring teachers at school who nurtured that love.

Why did you start Budding Artists?

There are so many extracurricular clubs that celebrate children’s success in sport or academics — but very little that truly champions creative children.

As a teacher, I noticed how little time creative subjects were given in the curriculum. I wanted to create something that enhanced what schools already offer, giving children space to grow artistically in a supportive community setting.

Growing up, I spent a lot of time on the sidelines of football pitches watching my brother pursue his passion — but there was nothing like that for me. Years later, when my first daughter showed a real flair for creativity, I noticed that same gap still existed.

So I created Budding Artists — a safe, family-like environment where children can grow together, build friendships with like-minded peers, develop real artistic skills, and feel proud of who they are. A place where their love of art is truly celebrated, nurtured, and rewarded. We offer a range of programs to suit the needs and interests of our students, from foundational courses in drawing and painting to specialized programs in digital art, illustration, and more. Whether you're just starting out or looking to take your skills to the next level, we have a program that will inspire and challenge you.

Why do you think art is so important for children?

Art gives children a way to express emotions and process the world around them. It allows them to explore different techniques and materials, discover what feels right for them, and develop confidence in their own choices.

It also builds fine motor skills that transfer into so many other areas of learning — but most importantly, it helps children feel seen and understood.

What do you hope children feel when they come to your classes?

Confident. Happy. Inspired.

More than anything, I want children to feel safe to be themselves, proud of what they create, and excited to explore their own ideas.

How do you help children feel confident if they’re nervous?

By creating a calm, welcoming environment and engaging children quickly in enjoyable activities.

I take time to really listen, offer positive praise, and pair children thoughtfully with others who are similar. I also keep open communication with parents so I understand each child as an individual. Confidence grows when children feel understood — and that’s always my priority.

Do you have a favourite artist or artwork?

I have two favourites for very different reasons.

Chuck Close, for his incredible technical ability and his unique approach to portraiture — he completely changed how people look at faces.

And Monet, for his breath-taking use of colour and the way his work feels alive and emotional.

If you could only use one colour for the rest of your life, what would it be?

Yellow — it’s happy, bright, and always shining.

Would you rather paint with spaghetti or draw with chocolate?

Paint with spaghetti… obviously.

What’s your favourite snack during a long art session?

Tuck shop sweeties (the classics never fail!).

One thing nobody knows about you?

I always wanted to be Julie Andrews in The Sound of Music — arms outstretched, twirling through the hills. If art teaching ever needs a musical number… I’m ready.

Do you have a message for any young artists?

To all our young artists —

You don’t need to be perfect to be creative. You don’t need to get it “right”. Art is about exploring, trying, making mistakes, and discovering what you love.

Every line you draw, every colour you choose, and every idea you have is important — because it comes from you. Some days your art will surprise you, and other days it might feel tricky, and that’s all part of the journey.

At Budding Artists, you are free to experiment, to be brave, to get messy, and to grow. Your ideas matter. Your creativity matters. And you should always feel proud of what you create.

Keep making. Keep imagining. Keep being you. 🎨✨
